Earth: Feeling the Heat ReviewA polar bear, stalking a seal, is suddenly thrown on her back when the ice cracks. The thin ice is unable to hold her weight, a weight that will lessen when she is unable to catch seals. She needs to gain more weight, "the weight she needs to raise a cub." If the temperature keeps rising and the ice keeps melting, who is going to "help the polar bear?' A puffin family is nesting high on the cliffs of a Scottish Island where they will dive for their supper. The temperature of the North Sea has risen just enough so there are no small fish to feed a Puffin family. What will happen to them? The seas are changing, but the puffins are not the only creatures who find their environment turning against them.An orange-spotted filefish can be seen swimming amongst the once vibrant, colorful coral that has turned a ghastly white. The fish is searching for coral polyps, but "the shallow water has been so warm that the coral polyps couldn't survive the heat." No one is there to help the filefish. The penguins of the Antarctica Ross Sea find themselves unable to pass "a colossal chunk of ice." They cannot get to their nesting island. Help is not on the way for them either. Around the world the fish, the fowl, and the insects are struggling because they cannot stop global warming. The butterfly, the zebra, the orangutan, the fly, the frog, the caribou, the pika, and the tiger cannot help themselves. Just who can stop the warming and save them?
This is a stunning book about how the food chains and animal life cycles are being disrupted by global warming. Each animal is briefly depicted in their natural habitat. We see what they eat, how their lives are upturned and changed by global warming. For example, we see an Alaskan Caribou searching for lichen. We then learn that "Spruce beetles are everywhere, chewing up the bark. Chompchompchomp!" As a result, the caribou herds are going hungry. The artwork is stunning with an Audubon aura about it. In the back of the book there is a world wide map depicting where the animals live and a page of suggestions that children can consider to participate in to slow global warming. This book is not at all subtle in its message, but is one most school age children are aware of. This amazing book is one you might want to add to your homeschool, classroom or library shelves!Earth: Feeling the Heat Overview
