Space Weather (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences) ReviewThis book was written and edited by some of the top researchers in the field. If you were to ask "who are the luminaries of space weather research today?" then you'd probably hear the names of many of the authors. (Granted, if you knew who to ask, you probably would know the answer to the question too!)
The book is remarkably thorough. Topics include the many drivers of space weather, scientific understanding, forecasting, history, and the many technological and economic impacts. Each chapter is authored by people at the top of the field (I'm not one of the authors, in case you're wondering) and they give you first-person insight.
Some of the subject matter, particularly the material in the science chapters, is quite sophisticated, but it's written with the intention of "normal" people having a shot at understanding it. It's the usual trade-off of any book on scientific research - it's tough to explain some of the more intricate science concepts without making the chapters painfully long. Unlike a book whose goal is to "popularize" the science, their charge was to actually cover it in enough detail to give the reader a basis for understanding the chain of events, i.e. they didn't have the convenience of being able to omit the more complicated material. However, the reader doesn't have to absorb the science chapters in order to be able to enjoy the rest of the book, so I am guessing a lot of people might skim over those sections.
A note about cost: the book is expensive because (I am guessing here, but it's from experience) the publisher recovers most of the production costs through sales. This is not uncommon - usually research institutions don't have the funding to "front" a book. Compared to the cost of many academic books it's a very reasonable price.Space Weather (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences) Overview
